Fundin was a proud dwarf of Durin’s line in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth, best remembered as the father of Balin and Dwalin. Born in the Lonely Mountain during the Third Age, he was part of the noble folk of Erebor. His early life was shaped by the tragic events following Smaug’s attack on the Lonely Mountain, which drove his people into exile.

Though details of his personal life remain scarce, Fundin’s name is forever linked with one of the most significant conflicts in dwarf history—the War of the Dwarves and Orcs. This brutal war was fought to avenge the death of King Thrór, and it culminated in the epic Battle of Azanulbizar outside the East-gate of Moria. Fundin fought with courage but fell during the clash.

After the battle, the fallen dwarves were honored with funeral pyres. Their armor was removed to equip the living, reflecting the dwarves’ resilience and practicality even in mourning.

Fundin’s legacy endured through his sons. Balin became one of Thorin Oakenshield’s most trusted companions and later the Lord of Moria, while Dwalin also played a key role in reclaiming Erebor. Though Fundin’s story is brief, his bravery and lineage hold an important place in the rich history of Durin’s folk.
