Steroid abuse is the use of steroids for an invalid medical reason. It may be a misguided attempt to treat sexual dysfunction (unrelated to a legitimate androgen deficiency), the perception of "low testosterone levels" or "male menopause," or to manage nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue. Men are targeted by advertisements and articles promoting the benefits of testosterone and explaining how to increase their levels.

Steroid abuse carries significant health risks, including cardiovascular disease, liver and brain damage, and infertility. In adolescents, steroids can cause premature aging and stunted growth. Safe alternatives to anabolic steroids also carry the risk of contracting blood-borne viruses, such as HIV, tetanus, or hepatitis C or B. Injections can also cause abscesses (pockets of pus) and blood clots if the technique is incorrect or if the injection is repeated in the same area.

When taking steroids, the body's production of testosterone is neutralized. When you stop abusing steroids, it takes weeks or even months for your body to produce its own testosterone again. Many men who abuse steroids decide to quit when they want to regain their fertility to start or expand a family. Typically, fertility takes between six and 18 months to recover.
