The Missouri state flag, adopted in 1913, is full of historical meaning. The red, white, and blue stripes reflect the United States’ national colors, symbolizing valor, purity, and vigilance. In the center, the state seal includes two grizzly bears for strength and bravery, a crescent moon representing Missouri’s potential for growth, and the motto “United We Stand, Divided We Fall.”

The 24 stars around the seal mark Missouri’s place as the 24th state to join the Union in 1821. The design blends state identity with national unity, which is why it’s often a point of local pride.

In fact, for many people in St. Louis, the Missouri flag sits alongside the STL pride flag as symbols of heritage and community spirit—one representing the broader state history, the other capturing the city’s unique cultural identity. Together, they show how local and state pride can go hand in hand.
